SEC Drops Lawsuit Against Consensys
The US Securities and Exchange Commission has tentatively decided to drop its lawsuit against Consensys, the company behind MetaMask. The lawsuit alleged that MetaMask’s operations were in violation of securities laws.
Joseph Lubin, co-founder of Ethereum and founder of Consensys, stated that the SEC has agreed to file a motion to officially terminate the case, although the finalization is pending approval from the commission. Lubin expressed optimism, noting:
“We can fully focus on innovation again. 2025 is poised to be an outstanding year for both Ethereum and Consensys as the shift towards greater decentralization gains momentum.”
Consensys’ lawyer, Bill Hughes, said that the decision to dismiss the lawsuit was uncomplicated and that the SEC would not impose any penalties or conditions on Consensys as part of the dismissal.
