Bitfinex Hacker Sentenced to Five Years in Prison
According to a report from Bloomberg on Thursday, Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein, who was involved in the 2016 hack of Bitfinex and subsequent money laundering, has been sentenced to five years in prison.
This sentence aligns with the recommendation from prosecutors for his involvement in the conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the United States.
While Lichtenstein could have faced a maximum sentence of 20 and five years for these charges, respectively, prosecutors argued for a reduced sentence due to his cooperation in not only his own investigation, but also in other cases such as the Bitcoin Fog case.
Lichtenstein’s co-conspirator and wife, known by her rap name “Razzlekahn,” is still awaiting her sentencing on November 18. As she played a smaller role in the money laundering conspiracy, prosecutors have proposed an 18-month sentence for her.
