France’s Regulator Questions Legality of Worldcoin Collecting Biometrics
The Worldcoin project of ChatGPT founder Sam Altman, which involves the collection of biometric data, has been met with doubt over its legality, according to Reuters.
The National Commission for Informatics and Liberties of France, or CNIL, has initiated an investigation with the assistance of German authorities, while the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office has also expressed interest in studying the process of verifying Worldcoin users.
The protocol, called World ID, is a mobile tool that enables identification through a retinal scan or phone number and has reportedly seen 2.1 million users sign up over the past two years.
Altman had previously demonstrated a long queue in Japan of individuals exchanging their retinas for WLD tokens.
