Detroit Will Allow Residents to Pay Taxes and Fees with Crypto
City officials yesterday announced that Detroit will now accept cryptocurrency payments, making it the largest city in the United States to do so.
Residents will be able to pay their taxes and other city fees using crypto, through a secure platform managed by PayPal.
Mayor Mike Duggan stated in a release that this move demonstrates Detroit’s commitment to creating a technology-friendly environment that empowers its residents and entrepreneurs.
He also expressed excitement about being one of the first major cities in the country to explore using blockchain technology in civic applications and providing residents the option to use cryptocurrency as a payment method.
According to Treasurer Nikhil Patel, the new payment option will be available in mid-2025, along with other improvements to city payment services.
This is part of a larger strategy by the city to embrace innovative technologies that can improve public services, promote civic engagement, and drive economic growth.
