Gary Gensler: SEC Should Lead Global Crypto Regulation
Gary Gensler, head of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), said in December last year that his agency should regulate the cryptocurrency market. To this end, it should receive appropriate powers.
Despite declining to comment this week on the FTX crash and Sam Bankman-Fried’s resignation as CEO of the exchange, he has recalled that the SEC has the right to request financial information from any company, including those representing the blockchain industry.
Gensler still believes his agency should be the key regulator of digital currencies, but at this stage, the SEC does not need additional authority from Congress.
