A US Attorney’s Office has charged two Chinese intelligence officers in absentia with bribing a government official to obstruct justice.

According to the statement, the amount was approximately $61,000 in Bitcoin. Guochun He and Zhang Wang reportedly tried to recruit an official to steal documents related to the “investigation and prosecution of a global telecommunications company” from China.

In fact, the employee was acting as a double agent and was under the control of the FBI.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland has said:

“This was a blatant attempt by Chinese intelligence officers to insulate a Chinese-based company from liability and undermine the integrity of our judicial system.”
