FBI Confiscates Illegally Obtained 3,879 BTC from Cold Wallet
The US Department of Justice has recently announced it has returned some funds that were allegedly stolen from a branch of Sony Group Corporation, converted into cryptocurrency and then seized by the FBI during an investigation.
According to the authorities, a company employee embezzled in May 2021 more than $154 million, transferring them between accounts and forging instructions for conducting transactions.
He then converted them into about 3,879 BTC (more than $190 million at the moment), and later transferred them to a cold wallet he controlled.
During the investigation, law enforcement officers obtained the private key from the wallet. It has not been unveiled how they managed to do this. In early December, the FBI seized the assets.
The case also involved Japanese police officers, Sony itself and Citibank.
